Curtain Call - Take Two
About how long does it take you to draw replies? Just wondering, cause I might decide to make a pony ask blog at some point...
Anonymous

I usually manage one a day, but there are blogs that update quicker or ones that update slower. Either is fine as long as you get the hang of it and you have the spare time.

Just a bunch of sketches from the Livestream a while back that I forgot to upload. Also Something Christmassy that was never finished.

when is ask octavia starting back up?

Well, I should finally be free around the 28 or so, so take a look out then. Sorry for such a long delay!

To avoid spamming everyone’s dashboards with me rambling, I’ll answer all your questions in this handy post!

Heh, 42 pages. How've the last 42 pages been treating you?

*Insert witty comment about The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy here*

That’s also probably somewhere around the number of hours of sleep lost trying to get drawings done. I did it for the ponies!

Why hello there, I'm a massive fan of your Ask Octavia blog, it's pretty awesome! Other than Vinyl and Octavia, who's your favourite couple in MLP? ~CoffeeGrunt

Hey, you’re that guy that writes Allegrezza! *insert Fluttershy yay here*

I’m not a shipping person by nature, so I guess I’ll be slightly silly and go with the Cakes. I mean, you’d have to be a pretty good couple to put up with Pinkie!

First off, thank you for such a great blog! It's my favorite! I was wondering about when you started Octavia... did you start getting asks pretty quickly? Did you have to "advertise" it anywhere? I was thinking about making an ask blog,(not oc or anything, probably Mane6 if I can think of something creative for them) but it would be kinda pointless if no one ever sees it. TL;DR mode: Did you have to self promote, or did asks just start rolling in?

You’re welcome! It’s nice to know people enjoy what you make, even if there’s better stuff out there!

As for starting out, I think I was among the earliest blogs, so I had the benefit of a very small pond, and drawing was sort of a side thing which I wasn’t really good at, but it was mostly pretty active with asks.

I’ve never advertised Ask Octavia anywhere, not on my dA or any forums or anything, and I was really surprised at how much it’s grown.

I did start 4 months ago though, and I’m pretty sure it’s changed a bit since then. There are some great new blogs that just aren’t getting enough love!

Best advice I can offer you is to just give it a go, with whatever character/characters you want, and most importantly have fun doing it!

(PS Oh and this list might also be useful.)

We now know you're a Cave Story fan. Did you play the original, or just the 3DS remastering?

Sorry, I can’t hear you over HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS MUSIC.

Why don't you do livestream? It's fun and works wonders for your creativity.

I’m pretty sure the computer I do my drawing on couldn’t handle any kind of livestream software, though it would be a cool idea!

I like your Octavia ask blog. Considering your comments on how it helped your drawing skill, would you recommend drawn ask blogs to others? They seem like fun and a good way to get ideas. (also may I use that pinkie sketch, with all credit given to you of course?)

Yup, I totally would. It’s a great way to let people see your progress and it’s a fun project as well.

In general I would say don’t get too hung up about something and just try it. If you don’t like it or find it fun, you can just leave it be. I run mine because I find it fun and people like it, so that’s what I do!

For first time artists I would also recommend these guides, as they certainly helped me!

Do you make updates to the ask Octavia blog on any kind of regular basis? And if so, what is this basis?
Anonymous

Eyup, it’s daily (usually) unless it isn’t (damn you real life!) and it updates sometime around 12:00AM GMT (not quite sure when that is for those in the US!).

Your art has truly improved and I love how cute you make the pony cast. Did you feel kinda intimidated at first? Like, nervous about doing an "Ask" blog?

Firstly thanks to you and everyone else who like my drawings!

And to answer your question, I didn’t really feel intimidated at first. There were hardly any people following me on tumblr, so it felt quite free and easy and I could actual handle answering every question and try out new drawing styles.

It’s slightly different now that I have a bunch of (awesome) people looking at my stuff, along with some of my artistic inspirations, and I don’t want to disappoint anyone!

Still, I have fun drawing and coming up with ideas, even if I do hit a few mental blocks every now and then.

And this answers has gone off at a tangent, so have a sketch of Pinkie Pie that I found.

I cannot for the life of me figure out where the names for the other three members of the quartet came from. Was there a specific piece of art or fanfic? Was it the VS tapes?
Anonymous

I don’t know the origins myself, but I got them from the wiki. The VS tapes just helped confirm them for me. Though there are a couple of alternative names as well.

Awesome quartet is awesome.

Also if you’re interested, this is how Octavia got her fanon name. I even drew one of the earliest pieces, so I guess I helped too!

What do you use to draw? It looks very nice.

Welp, in terms of software Paint Tool SAI (which is very popular apparently) and for hardware I use… an Acer Travelmate Laptop which is actually a pretty cool thing if it wasn’t so incredibly slow and didn’t crash ALL THE TIME. I’m not rich enough to own a fancy tablet thingy you see.

Do you know if anypony has actually started a K-Colt Audio stream featuring all the awesome music that people have made? or was that just a colab idea for a setting to get wrecked by DiscOctavia?

I had a talk with the mod of http://askpon3.tumblr.com/ a while back about making a radio stream, but really it’s just from the fic the Vinyl Scratch Tapes (one of the few I read from when I had free time) and I thought it would be a nice shout out, even if it is a bit old now.
